Tattoo Removal Q & A

How does PicoSure tattoo removal work?

Tattoo removal involves using special lasers that deliver pulses of intense light through the top layers of your skin to target the ink particles. The light breaks the ink into many tiny particles that your body absorbs. Once absorbed, your body’s lymphatic system eliminates the ink over time, typically in about four to eight weeks.

Family Life Medical uses Cynosure’s innovative PicoSure® tattoo removal system to selectively target the ink without damaging your surrounding skin.

After your treatment, you’ll notice an immediate slight whitening or “frosting” of your skin — the ideal PicoSure clinical endpoint — but this subsides immediately. You might also notice mild redness and swelling around the area. Dr. Scarborough gives you detailed aftercare instructions to help you keep the area moist and protect your skin.

You usually need multiple treatment sessions to properly fragment the ink particles, depending on the depth of the ink and other factors.

What is PicoSure tattoo removal?

Q-Switched lasers were considered the gold standard for removing tattoos until the launch of PicoSure. Q-Switched lasers use thermal energy to heat up and break apart the ink particles. With PicoSure, the ultra-short pulses hit the ink particles with a significant pressure that shatters the ink into tiny dust-like particles that are so small, they’re more readily absorbed and eliminated by your body.

The PicoSure technology stands out from the rest because the pulses are more frequent, rapid, and precise.

How much does tattoo removal cost?

The cost of tattoo removal depends on various factors, such as the size of your tattoo and the number of treatments needed. Most insurance companies won’t cover tattoo removal since it’s considered an elective cosmetic procedure. Following a consultation, Dr. Scarborough provides you with an estimate for your treatment series.

What are the benefits of PicoSure tattoo removal?

PicoSure offers many benefits. It’s especially successful at removing previously treated tattoos that weren’t successfully cleared in the past. It also works well for deeper set tattoos and multicolored tattoos, including greens and blues.

Fewer treatments are needed to remove your tattoo with PicoSure compared to other traditional methods of tattoo removal that usually only result in a gradual fading of the tattoo.

Similar to getting a tattoo, PicoSure tattoo removal is fast and relatively painless.
